Do you know all there is to know about waxing the hair off your skin? Read on for some surprising truths.
Waxing is a superb mode of hair removal. But even if you wax your skin regularly, there may be certain aspects about it that you’re not familiar with, such as –
1 It’s the only hair removal method that works ALL over the body.
Most methods of hair removal work on only certain parts of the body. For instance, you cannot shave the face or bikini zone. Similarly, depilatory creams are not recommended for the delicate facial skin. However, certain types of waxing are recommended even for the face, i.e. on the cheeks, jawline and upper lip areas. Meanwhile, you can wax the rest of the body without giving it a second thought, including the delicate underarms and bikini zone. Plus, the hair regrows more slowly with waxing (it takes about 28 days for the hair to reappear above the skin’s surface) than with depilation (the hair grows back in about four days).
2 It hurts more when you’re on your period.
Here’s something most women don’t know about waxing and the pain it causes – you are likely to feel the discomfort and pain more if you are just a few days away from your period, or on your period already. It has something to do with the surge of hormones in your bloodstream during this time. It is also said that the pain receptors in the body are hyperactive during this time, so the slightest discomfort becomes magnified. If you can wait for a while to get rid of the hair, then you should wait till your period is gone.
3 It works equally well for all skin types.
Waxing is also not as harsh on the skin as you might initially feel. In fact, it is one of the most skin-friendly hair removal methods, though it causes some amount of pain. To be fair, the pain should be attributed to the fact that hair is being pulled out from the skin, rather than the composition of the wax itself. Leading brands in India offer cold wax strips to suit all skin types, even sensitive ones. Plus, the ingredients in the wax help to nourish and hydrate the skin.
4 It is a good method to exfoliate and cleanse the skin while it waxes the hair.
Did you know that waxing leaves the pores of the skin open? This is why the hygienist at the beauty salon gives your waxed skin a cold-water wash after waxing it, to help close the pores. But this is a useful property – it is seen to cleanse the skin of surface dirt and excess oil, thus revealing fresher skin. It also removes dead skin cells and exfoliates the skin. After waxing, simply wipe off the excess wax with the wipes provided with the pack, and wash the skin with cold water.
